Presents for the New Year in April
Sri Lanka celebrates its Singhalese and Tamil New Year in mid-April. On this occasion it is customary to share presents, mostly consisting of new clothing-items. Of course we at Ayurveda Centre Lawrence Hill assiduously participate in this tradition and presented our gifts. This year we chose to give clothing to the residents of the home for the disabled which we sponsor. Everything was included, from underskirt to blouse. Added to that were new sheets for the inhabitants’ beds.
We would like to thank all our Ayurveda guests for their generous help in supporting this home.

Internet-Room at Lawrence Hill Paradise
We have created a separate room for the use of Internet. Our guests now have the possibility to use our notebook-computer or to connect their own to the World Wide Web. Our DSL-connection allows for a speedy service so that you can send your impressions of Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa and Lawrence Hill Paradise to your loved ones at home.

New Year 2008 at Lawrence Hill Paradise - Hikkaduwa
Do Ayurveda and New Year’s celebrations match? Why not? We thought a pool-dinner under the star-studded sky to be quite appropriate. An Ayurvedic buffet, a flute-player, traditional Singhalese dances and a song-programme this was spontaneously created by our guests and made this evening an unforgettable event for all.
We would like to thank our guests and the staff for this entertaining New Year’s Eve. And of course we greeted the New Year at midnight with a fresh coco nut juice!

Who is Who at Lawrence Hill Paradise
Many of our guests had repeatedly asked for a board displaying photos of our staff. This board is now complete and can be found in the reception area, clearly visible for visitors. Whether Ayurvedic doctor, gardener, chef or therapists … all were photographed. We hope that the search for “a therapist with black hair and brown eyes” is now a thing of the past.

Ayurveda-Experienced and Sri Lanka-Tested
Friederike is the new member in our Lawrence-Hill-Team as guest-relations-manager. She not only looks after our guests during their Ayurvedic cure, but also arranges the expeditions to Galle or to the nearby lagoon.
She has ample experience with Ayurveda and is a great fan of Sri Lanka.

Poolhouse, you’ve certainly changed …
Poolhouse? Yes, this is our completely new poolhouse! Our first guests after summer break quickly discovered it and its amenities. It not only provides much desired shade and cover during the occasional rain shower, but has also turned into a popular meeting point. And as always, our dog "Max" joins the crowd

Black Lily
We waited, we spoke to her, we took care of her. Finally these efforts are showing results: Our black lily is in full bloom. Of course we hope she will do this more often. This lily is truly an eye-catcher.

Beach Holiday
Unlike before, this year’s company outing did not take us into the cool hill-country. Instead we headed to the beaches of the west coast of our island.
As always, we started off from Lawrence Hill in the early morning hours so as to reach our destination early enough. Initially, we visited the zoo of Dehiwala before heading to our beach hotel. Our programme consisted of games, dance, food and - as always - the popular exchange of news.
We now look forward to our new and "old" guests to share our novelties with.

Let us Surprise You
Let us surprise you with our plans for our poolhouse. As every year, all necessary repairs, renovations and alterations are done during our annual summer break.
On July 12, 2008, everything will be ready. Including the poolhouse - or maybe something completely different? Come and find out.

An Important Certificate
With great pride our physicians Dr. Sagarika and Dr. Sandya presented us with the certificate which represents the license for the production of our own medicines. This certificate serves not only as proof of quality for us, but for our guests as well.

Teacher Of Yoga
Our yoga-teacher Nuwan was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to enhance his knowledge at the International Yoga Academy. Thanks to outside support, he attended the "Sivananda Yoga Vendanta Centre" in India for a whole month. Exalted and filled with new experiences and knowledge, Nuwan happily returned home. The only thing he really missed in India: spicy Sri Lankan food.
Nuwan and our team would like to express our sincere thanks to Kathrina and Heinz for so generously giving Nuwan this opportunity.

Staff News
Our guest relations manager Gabriele Metz left us at the end of the season. We would like to thank her for the excellent work she did at Lawrence Hill.
Meanwhile Max has decided to stay on for another year as guest relations manager.

Offspring Arrived
On October 29, 2007, our therapists Monika gave birth to a strong baby boy. The entire team at Lawrence Hill congratulates the proud parents.
As usual in Sri Lanka, the search for a suitable name took quite some time. First the letters had to be determined, then an astrologer and a monk were consulted, and the end-result was Vageesha Yasminá, which means “intelligent speaker”.
Welcome into this world and may you live long and healthy.

Our Jubilee
It has been six years already since we began to have the privilege of pampering our guests. To all those who have come to Lawrence Hill Paradise since then we express our sincere gratitude. Without you, we could not have “aged” like this. Staff and guests celebrated the occasion by spending an afternoon at the home for disabled nearby. The day was filled with dance,
song, and laughter and we handed out presents, lovingly packed by our staff.
Lawrence Hill Paradise will continue supporting this home for another year and preparing a wholesome meal for all occupants once a month. A big thank you goes out to all of our guests who supported this afternoon with much more than just their donations.

Salt Instead of Chlorine
During summer break this year, we not only repaired our swimming pool, but also installed a completely new water processing-system.
We are now using a technically advanced system for water-processing from Australia. This method completely eliminates the conventional use of chlorine, which often causes skin irritations and other problems. The systems complies with DIN-19643 Norm for water treatment, with more than 500,000 units installed worldwide.

The natural solution for disinfection
The technical process:
The Ecomatic E-Series equipment from the manufacturer Monarch is characterised by electronically controlled cells, in which an electrolysis takes place.
This system uses an extremely low concentration of salt (less than the salt-concentration of the liquid of human tears) in order to disinfect water. The salt within the water is fractionised through electrolysis by a highly developed technology, thus disinfecting the water in our pool. This process works completely automatic and is extremely reliable.

Lady’s Slipper Found
Freely adapted from Goethe: Alone I went in Ambalangoda, To seek for nothing … Stop! As always, we were looking for new plants for our garden and discovered this marvelous lady’s slipper. We simply had to have this beautiful orchid. Now it can be admired by everyone near our tearoom.

Greetings from Kitulgala
Fresh and recovered after our summer break, we gathered for our annual company outing just before beginning the new season. This year, by common demand, we headed to Kitulgala. Away from the coastal region our journey took us into the beautiful and cool hill country.
We had a full programme consisting of hiking, canoeing and splashing about in a pool. And of course there was no way to get around the traditional evening dance. The reunion of all the staff members lasted until late in the evening. After all, there were lots of news to be told and gossip to be spread after four weeks of absence.
Now everyone happily returns to work and we are all looking forward to welcoming friends and guests alike.

Dry Pool - Swimming Lesson of a Different Kind
It was quite an operation which we had planned for our swimming pool during summer break this year. Firstly 280,000 litres of water had to be pumped out, then all tiles were checked. Now defective tiles are exchanged, joints repaired and in the end thousands of litres of water of the usual quality has been replaced. Punctually for the start of the season, our pool will eagerly wait for the first swimmers.

Oil On The Head - Traditional New Year’s Ceremony in April
Cooking milk-rice, rubbing oil on the head, preparing lunch at a predefined moment and leaving the house in the right direction. All these actions are specified by horoscope-readers for the Ceylonese New Year. Of course we adhere to these rules to make sure we will have another happy, healthy and prosperous year.

Who Needs Wool-Lice? - Thank You Uli in Cologne
Thanks to your help and tips we were able to almost completely eradicate the scourge of wool-lice without the use of chemicals. Our hibiscus-plant says thank you with plenty of new blossoms.

Practice Makes Perfect
If you rest, you rust! Of course this is not what we want. Hence we constantly work on ensuring that our guests receive only the highest quality of treatments. This is why our therapists receive regular training by our doctors, who are happy to share their long-standing, extensive knowledge.

Leopard On The Jump - Encounter in Yala National Park
We are always happy to organise tours for our guests before or after their cure at Lawrence Hill Paradise. Waltraud and Bernd returned with wonderful snapshots of their safari-tour to Yala National Park. Completely excited they shared their impressions with us. Unfortunately not all animals cooperated during their photo-sessions as desired. Nevertheless, both were enraptured by wild elephants, leopards, bears and many other small animals.

Our Latest Addition
Always on the lookout for new plants, new colours, new types, we discovered this beauty for our tropical garden.

Happy End for our Cook
A long wait and finally with a happy ending our cook Dushanta on February 15., proposed to our therapist and yoga-teacher Champa. She accepted his proposal and they were happily married. Of course we all celebrated the event properly with Ayurvedic food and drink. Our appreciation goes out to our guest Guenter, who supported the couple with words and deeds during their preparations.

Loyal Swiss Friends
In recent months there has been many negative reports about Sri Lanka, especially in Switzerland. Unfortunately, partially incorrect advice and recommendations are published, keeping some guests from wanting to travel to Sri Lanka. All the more we are happy about our Swiss guests who stick to us and continue to visit us on a regular basis. By doing so, they are able to draw their own picture and conclusions of the situation. The common opinion of our guests is that it is still possible to enjoy cures and excursions in Sri Lanka while staying away from the disputes in the east and north.
